Experience delivers the Perfect Gift

Researchers have found the components needed to deliver a perfect gift and they are all to do with actions rather than physical items!Expeience makes the perfect gift

Gifts that involve the recipient in an action or event tend to be talked about more than when a gift is just a possession albeit a prized one. Being able to talk about the gift helps give the recipient an extra bonus (often known as Bragging rights) to the gift which in turn makes it more memorable and pleasurable.

The research has shown that gifts which involve the recipient in an experience (an Adrenaline challenge, Romantic Holiday or Day out for example) brings more happiness than a purely material purchase (e.g. a commemorative gift or Flowers).

One potential explanation of this difference, research suggests, is that experiences can prompt storytelling more than mere possessions. The telling of stories has long been seen as a pleasurable experience and facilitates the re-living of the actual event in question; telling stories encourages embellishment, and foster greater social connection, all of which assist to enhance enjoyment of the original gift.

Experience a perfect giftResearcher’s further studies demonstrate that people are more inclined to talk about their experience than a material purchase and they derive more happiness from doing so. They also confirmed that taking away the ability to talk about experiences (but not the material goods) could diminish the enjoyment they bring.

In one significant test the participants were told they may keep one gift, either the best gift purchase but without being able to talk about it or the second most important purchase and were allowed to talk about it. Those taking part that recalled experiences were more likely to choose a less significant purchase they could still talk about compared to those who just recalled buying physical gifts.

I must admit sitting thinking about gifts I have given and been given I can easy recount those that involved an experience and although can remember great physical gifts I have received I struggle to recall them easily.

What do you think; are gifts you participate in better, let us know?

Ten cheap anniversary gifts for him

Now to clear this up straight away we mean low to no cost gifts not bawdy gifts that you’ll look back at later and wonder what was I thinking.
We know people who spend thousands on their wedding anniversary gifts however it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to show that your loved one means the world to you. Here are a few tips for an anniversary gift that will show you care without breaking the bank.

  1. Everyone knows the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. However avoid the traditional and probably tried heart shaped chocolates; give him heart shaped pizza or heart shaped bacon. Now we are talking.
  2. Make a playlist/mixtape. It’s very old skool but who doesn’t want to feel like a teenager for a while. Pick your favourite songs (you remember your first dance song right?) or songs with some meaning (e.g. The Power of Love or I Will Always Love You) and let all those memories come flooding back. If you’re stuck for some ideas here’s the top 50 love songs of all times: http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/1538839/top-50-love-songs-of-all-time
  3. Give him the gift of quality-time. Turn off your phone, step away from your laptop, stop tweeting your BFF, give the dog a bone and cart the kids off to weird Aunt-Julie; just talk to each other for a change. When was the last time either of you did that?
  4. Make him a trophy or a medal, make it meaningful but don’t expect him to wear it if it has even so much as one heart on it.
  5. Give him the day off. Check when your anniversary falls on this year and pull a sneaky one by booking him a surprise day off from work then spend the day together. An unexpected lie-in is a feeling that can’t be matched.
  6.  Writing love notes isn’t just reserved for teenagers. Write out all the reasons you like his cute …(insert his best bit here) and hide the notes in obvious and less obvious places.
  7. Be less romantic – in all seriousness, don’t be too soppy, take the pressure off him and expect nothing. You’ll be surprised by the results.
  8. Avoid giving him socks. Step away from the socks. This isn’t Christmas. This is sexy-time day. There is nothing sexy about socks. Never, ever.
  9. Alcohol is always an answer and if you want to put a romantic spin on it- track down a bottle of something from your anniversary year. Although remember get ‘romantic’ drunk rather than ‘you-think-I’m-getting-fat’ drunk to ensure a great time.
  10. If none of the above reach the spot then fall back to the classic gift ideas; turn up naked with beer. Rarely (if ever) a wrong choice.

2nd Anniversary Gifts

Second Wedding Anniversary GiftsIt is two years since your wedding (doesn’t time fly) and your second wedding anniversary is fast approaching; here’s the facts on what the material or symbol is appropriate for 2nd anniversary gifts:

Cotton is the traditional 2nd anniversary gifts theme

A Traditional Anniversary gift should be themed around Cotton or Straw or for a more contemporary gift idea the modern list shows China as the appropriate theme.

Rose Quartz is the second anniversary gemstone themeYou could also look to the Gemstone Anniversary list which suggests Rose Quartz (although some variance is possible with Garnet also quoted) and if this is still not your ideal theme the appropriate flowers are Cosmos, of which there are many varieties.Comos are the appropriate flowers for the 2nd wedding anniversary

For 2nd anniversary gifts, Cotton themed presents are relatively easy to find with Handkerchief gifts sets or personalised Mr and Mrs Robes/ Towels a great choice. If your looking for a getaway break why not theme it to match the second anniversary. Something like a trip to the cotton fields in America or with straw you could look to have a picnic in a hayloft or simply arrange a hoe-down party with authentic straw bales.

We see a lot of Rose Quartz items purchased for the 2nd Anniversary both Necklace/Pendant sets and a lovely double Rose Quartz heart which is great for the 2nd year anniversary

We’ve got many more 2nd anniversary gift ideas on our main web site styled not only on the traditional material and the other lists that have been published but the ideas are drawn from lots of popular gift sites.

Experience counts for a perfect gift

a well wrapped presentResearchers have discovered the components of a perfect gift and they are all to do with actions rather than physical goods!

Gifts that involve the recipient in an action or event are talked about more than when a gift is just a possession; being able to talk about the gift helps give the recipient an extra bonus to the present which in turn makes it more memorable and pleasurable.

Cornell University’s Amit Kumar chaired a  symposium titled ‘ON DOING AND HAVING’ and updated, by way of empirical data, the work Professor Thomas Gilovich’s previous research that showed that buying experiences brings people more happiness than material purchases.

The research has shown that gifts which involve the recipient in an experience (an Adrenaline challenge or a Romantic Holiday for example) bring more happiness than a purely material purchase (e.g. a commemorative gift or flat-screen television).

One potential explanation of this difference, recent research suggests, is that experiences can prompt storytelling more than mere possessions. The telling of stories has long been seen as a pleasurable experience and facilitate the re-living of the actual event in question; telling stories encourage embellishment, and they foster greater social connection all of which assist to enhance enjoyment of the original gift.

Experiences are better than sliced bread!Researcher’s further studies demonstrated that people are more inclined to talk about their experiences than their material purchases and they derive more happiness from doing so. They also confirmed that taking away the ability to talk about experiences (but not the material goods) could diminish the enjoyment they bring.

In one test participants were told they may keep one gift, either the most significant purchase but without being able to talk about it or the second most important purchase and were allowed to talk about it. Those taking part that recalled experiences were more likely to choose a less significant purchase they could still talk about compared to those who just recalled buying physical gifts.

So what does all this mean? well one point that sprung to mind was that you can be more frugal with a gift that involves an experience as the enjoyment and happiness derived gives you more bang for your buck!

I must admit sitting thinking about gifts I have been given I can easy recount those that involved an experience and although can remember great physical gifts I received I struggle more to recall them. What do you think are gifts you participate in better, let us know?

Time Tested Wedding Gifts

Someone tweeted a friend the other day to say they still had their gift after twenty years of marriage, this got us thinking especially for those celebrating double digit anniversaries:

What Wedding Gift do you still use regularly?

Now I’ve been married 25 years this year(2012) and we still use the Food Processor we got from my work friends for our wedding! Now that’s not bad; we don’t use it every week but it does see regular use and it really isn’t pretty anymore but this, we feel, has passed the test of time!
our food processor 25 years on
I’ve just been reminded that we also still have a Carriage Clock sitting on our mantel which has kept good time since we got married the only problem with this item now is we have to sit closer to it to see the time!

These plus two other items make up the complete items we’ve still got along with a many bits of sets of cutlery and dinner sets. Given no disasters (thankfully) have affected our gifts there is little left.

We would love to know what’s your cherished gift that has stood the test of time?
